Losing His Grip The Storm edition by Jennifer Jenkins Literature Fiction eBooks

This is the first time I've been exposed to this author, and her writing is wonderful. She had a way of pulling me into the short rather quickly. She touched my emotions and made me care about the characters as if they were real people.

The reason for the 3 stars:

Writing/Characters - 5 stars
Jenkins touches emotions when you read--a talent, especially in a short. I've read a few lately I won't rate because they were more like a montage of thoughts than a story. It is for Jenkins' writing ability that I've written this review.

Length - 4 stars
Maybe this is unfair because I wanted more, but with that said LOSING HIS GRIP was only 35% of the download, and it's a small file to start with.

Formatting, facts and advertising - 2 stars
Included in the short, which isn't (or wasn't when I downloaded) a note to the reader letting them know there are 5 more shorts included--but these are only sneak peeks at shorts by other authors. So, assuming the second included in the Kindle book was another complete short, as the first was so short, I read it only to be met with a "read more" link to Amazon to buy the other short. There was no note on the Amazon page that snippets of other shorts were included. There was no mention proceeding the other shorts that these were samples only. Even at the front of the Kindle book (looking closer at that now) there's note of these other shorts and their authors, but no note these are samples.

Also, the short by Jenkins mentions a snow storm in San Francisco. Now, I'm not from there, nor have I visited there, but I didn't think it snowed in California. I Googled this online and found they received one inch in 1976, but it's more common outside the city for snow to settle on mountain peaks. In the short there is mention of icy water, and this is in the city. I find it implausible.

So overall (if you can overlook the snow/ice) I would recommend LOSING HIS GRIP if you want just a short read that will touch you. And know going in that the other shorts included are samples only before you start.

Losing His Grip The Storm edition by Jennifer Jenkins Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I was amazed at how well I knew the characters by the end of this short story. You would think it would take an entire novel to give characters the depth this short stories does. Amazing. A thoughtful ending that made me appreciate more the people close to me.
Heart-wrenching, captivating, wonderful. Leaves you with a sense of resolve to do better, to be better. Looking forward to more of the artist's work.
Losing His Grip was a great story. I loved it. Although I liked the ending, I felt for the guy. It was just too short. You really cared about the main character.
Though this story was short, I felt an instant connection to the characters. Watching Grayson, the main character, go through what many at his age experience was powerful. I wasn't expecting the twist at the end. Overall, I will be purchasing other stories from this author.
Wow. I cared about these characters straight away! Great imagery, spot on characterization and heart felt story telling.
A bittersweet look at a couple in the setting sun of their lives. A stark look at what matters in the end and the tenderness of seasoned love.
When the unexpected happens-- true love shows it's face.
Excellent writing is all I can say. I am floored. I read this in about 20 minutes, I couldn't put it down. The characters were very real and the stories are emotionally charged. It will make you think about your own life and how you treat people, which is always a good thing. I would definitely recommend this!
"Losing His Grip" by Jennifer Jenkins is a short story about a man called Grayson Banks who is aging and has a bad case of arthritis. His disease has severely limited what he can do, and he must retire from his profession as a dentist. His wife has not been so affected and seems to be able to do most of what she likes to do, while Grayson is often dependent on her even though he doesn't like to admit it or like it.

His resentments and grief come to a head when the couple attend a ceremony during which Grayson receives an award. It's a cold, snowy night in San Francisco, of all places, and he isn't thrilled about going, but they go anyway. Grayson's frustration and anger can be felt as he battles life with arthritis, and his wife's patient understanding sometimes isn't enough to make him feel better.

This is a bittersweet tale of how old age treats some people while others may be a little luckier, and it is also a story of love. I was engaged in this couple's life from the very beginning and found myself caught up in the story. The writing is quite good and flows along to an ending that proves a lifelong love between these two people. I enjoyed reading it very much.

I highly recommend this short story.
