EXCERPT
The city was burning. Ash drifted down like snow, blanketing the cracked pavement, mixing with the blood that leaked from broken bodies strewn in the street, on the sidewalks. In the distance the thunder of mortar shells competed with choruses of screams cut short before their crescendo.
Across the street a pack of vampires dragged a pair of women--mother and daughter by the look of them—down the steps of a smoldering brownstone, fighting and arguing with every step over who had rights to the kill. No one stopped to help. They were too busy running for the overturned cars that barricaded either end of the block, clamoring, climbing to escape this nightmare.
All around her creatures that should have lived in the dark, in the night, or on the fringes of the human world were running amok. In the broad light of day. The dregs of Mirus society had erupted, and the ignorant, foolish humans were paying the price.
A shadow blotted out the sun, and she looked up to see a dragon, glittering black wings extended in a magnificent show of strength as it hovered a dozen feet above the street. It inhaled, armored chest expanding before it opened its enormous mouth and rained fire over every living thing, Mirus and human.
Isla did not feel the burn, but that didn’t stop the bite of fear as she watched more people swarm in. Fae soldiers with flashing blades took formation against a small army of goblins and trolls. A pride of Felis and a pack of Wylk flanked the other side, tearing through the disorganized ranks of underworld creatures with vicious claws and fangs.
Blood, so much blood.
The sound of mortar shells drew nearer until she could see the tanks of the human military beyond the barricade of vehicles, surrounded by soldiers kitted out for urban warfare. They were being picked off along either side by creatures Isla didn’t even recognize. As she watched, a broad-shouldered, white-faced soldier went down under a mass of razor-studded tentacles, the spray of blood soaking his nearby companions.
A voice rose upon the air, overpowering the sounds of violence with a language of the ancients. Isla looked up to the rooftops and spotted a robed figure, arms raised to the heavens. In a sharp, divisive motion, he brought his hands down and apart. The ground trembled and split. Trolls and goblins screeched as they fell into the pit, and other fighters scrambled back to the relative safety of the edge to continue fighting. Backs turned, they didn’t see the beasts that emerged behind them, clawing, crawling, decimating everything in their path.
The staccato pop of automatic weapons announced the arrival of the military on the scene. Some of the citizens they were allegedly protecting went down in the spray of bullets. A young boy fell, motionless, across the body of a wraith. The dragon bellowed, rising up above the chaos to lay waste to the barricade and unleashing the paranormal hell on the last hope of the human race.

I downloaded this short story as a freebie for my Kindle. It is a lead in or teaser story, but wraps up with enough closer to allow the reader to breath in a non-panicked fashion and wait. Ha ha.Please note - this short ends with a final vision involving Isla and Ransom. If your file ends with Isla in the office of the bar, you do not have the updated file. Swing back to the retailer you got it from and ask customer service to send you the most recent file.
This story is pure fantasy and paranormal goodness. Vampires, Seers, Wraiths, Faes oh my! The opening chapter is a kick-butt action scene. It was quite unique and I loved it.
I enjoyed all the characters. The story premise is just getting under way and sounds like loads of fun. Ransom and Isla make a perfect sexy couple. Sparks are flying already and I am looking forward to the actual fireworks.
Kait Nolan has a wonderful knack of writing movement and action. I have no idea how she can give the reader such tingles with simple words like: "through the tunnel" or "we need to leave". Amazing. I can image that reading an entire novel written by Nolan would be great fun.
Blindsight is a nice sample of this storyline and these characters. I look forward to reading Revelation once it is released.

Blindsight A Mirus Short Story edition by Kait Nolan The Forge Book Finishers Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
This was just a tease of a story, but it peaked my curiousity enough about the leads, Seer Isla and Assassin Ransom, that I went looking for the continuation of their story, Revelation - it isn't out yet. Blindsight gave only hints at what might be an interesting world with a mix of paranormals - werewolves, vampires, and fae - and the promise of a romance viewed through one of the heroine's visions.
A Seer, Isla has been held captive by a vicious crimelord for most of her life. Her ability has been used to destroy anyone who opposes him. Ransom is a Fae assassin who sometimes takes commissions from this same crimelord. He comes to her rescue, but when she touches him, she sees blood and death.
I guess I'll have to pick up the full length sequel this fall. This was a great short story, but a little too short for my taste. I wanted more... more...more! Can't wait to read the other Mirus stories. Highly recommended.
Normally I don't read paranormal, but by the time I realized this was paranormal, I was already hooked, somehow. However Nolan worked her magic, i stayed for the whole ride and intend to get my eyes on other stories with these characters. Recommended, you bet.
I haven't read any other books in the Mirus series, so that's my caveat.
This felt more like a snippet than a complete story. That doesn't mean I didn't like it, and it did it's job as I was left wanting more. It just didn't have the same feel as a complete short story.
The world is very interesting, I liked the characters, and there is a setup here for a very good action-romance.
Nolan has a good narrative voice and I'll be checking out more from her.
I am so happy that this was a free read because as good as the abstract makes the story sound, its nearly impossible to know what's going on due to the "missing?" Text between pages!! Ive had this happen in other kindle editikns, but NEVER every 2nd or third page. Ive read this author before and was looking forward to reading this short, which is a sample or teaser to the full story. I try to patiently wait for better editing when it comes to digital books, however this one is just terrible and a smack to the authors reputation for anyone who believes the author did it!
Nolan has managed to create a fresh-feeling world that doesn't require pages of backstory to understand. Ransom and Isla are --from their first introduction -- interesting characters with whom the reader will want to spend more time.
In my experience, the majority of teasers fail because they include details that are boring to anybody who isn't into the story already or the plot is just too slight to make it worth the reading. Both of these pitfalls are avoided by Nolan.
Will a free paranormal romance teaser be the best thing you've read all year? No. But it is possible for a free teaser to be worth the initial read and introduce you to an interesting new author.
Blindsight wasn’t what I expected, even though the blurb told me to expect blood, horror, and apocalypse. The opening scene was enough to almost gag a reader on smoke and gore; somehow, though Red had its graphic scene, I hadn’t expected the level of violence running through this story.
And yet. The characters are fully drawn and have realistic motivations and interactions. In the end, though I spent the night dreaming crazy scenes, the story sucked me in and didn’t let go. I was awake even later, wondering about details of a world where psychics, fae, and werewolves operated like the darkest underbelly of any crime syndicate. I am absolutely anticipating good things whenever Nolan releases Revelation.
For those who enjoy short stories, and those who are looking for the scheming of evil overlords and rebellious factions, this should be right up your alley, regardless of price.
