As a child, this book opened my eyes and made me dream. As an adult, it brought tears to my eyes as I remembered all those great joys and lessons I forgot. This is a children's book with pictures and large print. It follows the story of Hero, a young teen who is scarred, rejected, and alone. Throughout the book Hero and those surrounding him learn various lessons about life which both children and adults today can learn from. The messages are clear - Jesus loves His little children, and will rescue them from evil and teach them how to be the best they can be. He can heal their wounds and sees through secrets. And each one of us can be a Hero for Christ.Of course, this book is an allegory and can provide a starting point for discussion for those too young to understand the true meaning behind it. The beginning of the first chapter is a bit hard to get through with some unfamiliar terminology, but if you can get to the end of the first chapter, you can see why and it's smooth sailing from there. It's a chapter book. Each chapter is a separate story, but the characters are woven together throughout.
Honestly I would recommend and even buy this book for every single person I know with kids, especially ages 4 to 10. Unfortunately the book is out of print, hard to find, and expensive. But it's worth the price, I promise!

I heard about this book from a homeschool Mom, and prior to that I have never heard of it. It got me intrigued because it is a Christian allegory, also reading about the winner of the international Artist getting to illustrate the new 30th Anniversary Edition. I have not seen the old illustrations, but i was not impressed with these ones, and neither were our kids. They said they looked ugly and scary. Sorry, artist, but this is a children's book, and the illustrations, should be warm and cartoonish, these are dark, and too harsh.
The story is wonderful and our 3 kiddos were sad, when I was done with reading. I need to purchase the other two books.
If I was buying it for the first time, I would have gone for the old book, and skip this one, altogether.
If my review helped you in your decision making, please give me a helpful vote, and let me know, my time writing this review was well spent. -)
Tales of the Kingdom, book one of a trilogy, is a lovely account in allegory form of many truths that we need daily reminders of in our lives. It is a quest for truth and to find the King. There is the villain, called the Enchanter, who rules over Enchanted City with an iron fist; and the underground taxi service that seems to always know what the villain and his henchmen are up to and always knows if there has been a sighting of the King. There is the safe place, Great Park, at the other side of the dreaded garbage dump, where orphans can escape to if they are fortunate enough to know about it, or maybe, a taxi might take them there. The young hero in the story is Scarboy, an orphan, who escapes through the garbage dump with his little brother to try and find the King his mother secretly told him about before her death. It is a collection of sequential short stories, lauding love and caring, exposing greed and fraud, lies and wickedness, bit by bit attempting to break down the Enchanter's stronghold. The other two books are Tales of the Resistance and Tales of the Restoration. The art work in the original books is outstanding and adds visual beauty to an already beautiful story. I highly recommend this book, which leaves you thinking for a lifetime.
I am having such a wonderful time reading this to my girls at bedtime. This book series is great for so many reasons. I love that it is one continuous storyline with developing characters but each chapter has a beginning, middle and end that leaves them satisfied as a bedtime story. And each chapter has it's own moral so it's great to be able to reference particular stories and their metaphors as we are doing life. I have been moved to tears on more than one occasion because of the truth found in the metaphor and the moving way they are communicated. I LOVE THIS SERIES! I would recommend it to everyone and especially to parents. It's a marvelous way to augment Biblical teaching.
