John Quincy Adams the often Ignored Sixth President of the United States tracks the life and times of John Quincy Adams from boyhood until his death. John Quincy was the first case of the son of a president of the United States taking office after the father. In many ways the two President Adams were similar in temperament and in performance. Neither understood politics, neither had the common touch. Both of them were scholars, and in another era might have made a career of teaching or research. John Quincy stated in his writings that he had an ambition to be a poet – but poetry didn’t pay any greater a salary back then than it does now. He is unique in that his real political career began after his term as president and while he was the elected representative of Massachusetts. Perhaps his best service to his country, however, was that of diplomat – long before he became even a Senator, let along the President of the United States.
We invite you to journey with us, to learn about an intelligent, inquisitive, fun-loving boy who grew to become a taciturn, argumentative, stubborn man. He said once of himself, “I have defeated no great evil and affected little good.” Was he correct? Or did he do more good than he realized? Read for yourself, and find out.

John Quincy Adams The often ignored sixth President of the United States eBook Mark Steinberg

This book is a good overview of the remarkable life of John Quincy Adams. Although not ranked among the great Presidents, he is truly a GREAT American. He was probably one of the most qualified men ever to hold the Presidency. As the author points out, Adams was the son of the famous Founding Father and second President, John Adams. John Quincy was also a scholar, diplomat, senator, statesman, politician, president and fierce anti slavery advocate.
I found the author's depiction of his mother, Abigail Adams, quite interesting, as well as John Quincy's work as a strong anti slavery advocate, after his presidency, as the congressional representative of Massachusetts.
Although the book could use a little better editing, the prose was simple and straightforward and the author does a good job of illustrating the events and achievements of John Quincy's life. However, I didn't get a sense of John Quincy, the man. His ideas, motivations and personality did not fully resonate with me. The author also goes on tangents that, while are at times are interesting, these are neither relevant or insightful to the protagonist. This space could have better been devoted to discussing in more depth John Quincy's prickly personality and an analysis of his apparent "failed" Presidency. As a result, I did learn some new things about John Quincy's life, but gained, at best, only a superficial understanding of John Quincy, the man.

John Quincy Adams The often ignored sixth President of the United States eBook Mark Steinberg Reviews

Well written and an easy read. Expansive review of JQ's life but somewhat lacking in research documentation and support of some statements. I enjoyed reading this book on a little known President.
Well worth the read!
The author has embedded links to some non-academic websites, which is not a good sign for biographies. Uneven writing and poor editing made the reading difficult.
This is a wonderful read. So little is said of a President whose tenure accomplished little, but a wonderful man.
It really cover everything from him being a child to President and the end as being a representive for his country. We need to take a page from his life as true Patriotic for this country. He continued to do things that he thought was good for his country; when others made fun of him or just dislike John Quincy.
One of the items in my bucket list is to read the biographies of all the presidents. This is the seventh one. I am so glad that I chose to read it. The book is filled with historical facts. I was truly surprised at all the political backstabbing that occurred during this time. At every turn, John Quincy was blocked because of the personal ideologies of others. Henry Clay and Andrew Jackson being the strongest. It sounds like modern day politics doesn't it?
A most enlightening background history of the Adams family. You must read this book if you are the least bit interested in the Presidents of our country.
