Set in 1966 and spanning two generations, here we have two wonderful stories intertwined. They tell us of a young Irish girl, who, having lost her father in a tragic accident, goes in search of the truth about her mother who died, giving her life. You will be taken on a journey and will be captivated by the ingenious way the author draws you in, almost like a spider into a web and spins a tale of mystery and intrigue. The many colourful characters are very endearing and can make you feel moved one minute and then have you laughing the next. Facts that are mentioned in the early stages seem to have no real bearing on the plot but as you read on, things falls nicely into place and everything comes together at the end in a neat package. It is a tale of triumph over adversity and reminds you, the reader, that with courage and determination, nothing is impossible.

Chris Sullivan is a very skilful and inventive writer and any stories that he has to tell, I want to hear, because this has to be one of the finest novels I have ever read. How does the story end? Well, that is for me to know and you to find out. Why not treat yourself today? You will be glad that you did.
The mystery of who Gertie Ford begins with a daughter who never knew her mother. Set in Ireland in a time that could be yesterday, the author fills the pages with wonderful names and descriptions of places and characters. You get the feeling that you're a tourist who stopped in a country pub and ended up listening to a local legend and you can't leave until you hear the ending.

The story begins with the death of Nuala's father who's not really her father and who left her with little information about her real mother, Gertie. Nuala embarks on a quest to find out who her mother was and in doing so enters a world that parallels Gertie, devoting alternate chapters to the two women and in doing so creates a fascinating roadmap to the mystery. Sullivan has carefully detailed the characters along the way as the story of Nuala and Gertie races to the end and the final resolution. His attention to words and expressions helps to fill the spaces and gives us a portrayal of a place and time that endures its hardships and joys.
