I know this is a spin-off of the Cassie Palmer series, but I haven't read those books. I read the short story about Claire in On the Prowl, so decided to give this series a try.

I loved this book. Karen Chance crafted amazing characters. I've found in this genre, the female heroines tend to be too over-the-top and annoying. Not true of Dorina. She's likeable and believable. It seems like none of the primary or secondary characters are one-dimensional, so you can get invested in all of them.

The story is action-packed, easy to follow, and interesting. I love the way Dory, Luise-Cesare, Mircea, Radu, ect...all relate to eachother. The strained father-daughter relationship & romance elements are all nicely done. There's also a good dose of humor - real humor that made me laugh, not the kind that's only funny to the characters in the book.

As someone not familiar with this world through the Cassie Palmer books, I had no problem following the story. And it wasn't b/c the author overloaded the book with background info to get you up to speed - the necessary info was naturally weaved though the story. So, I don't think you need to read the other books to enjoy this one.
This is paranormal of yesteryear with a subtlety urban paranormal now lacks. It's light in the romance, but present. Vampire world is interesting, and so are the characters.
I read this for the second time. Absolutely LOVED it! I love how KC reintroduced Louis-Cesare in this series and how at times it crossed details with Cassie Palmer books. Also liked seeing this side of Mircea. The hint of attraction between Dory and Louis-Cesare was hot and funny all at once.
This fast paced action filled book was fun and entertaining. What kept me reading were the good characters and the unique story elements. There were times the running around felt like running in circles and I almost lost interest. That is why there are four stars instead of five.
I really enjoyed this story! The characters were terrific and I absolutely love Dory! But I think my favorite character was Olga the Bergtroll and I hope she is in future stories too! I also really like Claire and even little Stinky!!! I am starting on the next book in the series right now!
This ties in beautifully with the Cassie Palmer series. There is more than one crisis but by the end of the book, everything is neatly tied. Dory is a violent gal with a good heart. She doggedly searches for her only friend when the past has shown her that she is alone and reviled in her world. As a result Dory finds some acceptance and truth about her past. I am eager for book 2.
Karen Chance gives you two shots at heroines who are distinctly different Cassie Palmer and Dory Basarab. Dory is all violence wrapped in a moral shell. She tries to fit in but damn if her vampire half doesn't. Her story dovetails neatly with the Cassie Palmer series (if you haven't read it I HIGHLY recommend it) and you see her struggling to manage her half-Vampire half-Human side, her squabbles with her father's men, (vampires), her roommates needs (fae), and the general baddies of the universe (mages). Dory is hilarious, sarcastic, powerful, and her own woman who makes her own path. If you're into urban fantasy, paranormal romance, or just plain strong women this is the book for you.
This had a good rating and I liked the description of the heroine in the review, but the actual written character fell short. Every guy falls for Dory even though she demonstrates no likeable qualities. I am tired of sarcastic and violent women somehow mysteriously instantly earning unquestioned devotion from hot guys. Whaa? The author also substituted battle scenes for character development, so it was just ho-hum for me. I actually put the book down in the middle of yet another fight scene to answer some not really pressing work email as it just didn't grip my attention. I'm hoping that the author puts more time into character development in future books in the series, but I'm not really hooked enough to know if I will bother picking up book 2. I paid full price for book 1 and would only try book 2 if it goes on sale.
